The Liposuction Procedure Clarified

Even though it is a relatively new procedure, liposuction has become the most common cosmetic procedure performed. And, if you thought that it was something that only women have done, as a type of weight-loss technique, then you would be wrong.

The increase in the number of men having these surgeries performed is surprising. While it is not intended as a diet solution or alternative, liposuction can certainly help remove fat deposits and tone your body.

This popular procedure does not necessarily have to be performed at a hospital or surgery center, as it can also be done at the doctor's office. Naturally there are pros and cons related to both locations. Normally, only a small volume procedure will be performed as an out patient basis due to the cost. If a larger volume of fat needs to be removed or if this is being done in conjunction with other procedures, then your doctor will speak with you about the options available to you and together you will make an informed decision.

Plastic surgeons or even dermatologists perform many of these liposuction procedures. Keep in mind that any licensed physician may perform the operation, as no standardized training is required. As a result of this there will be differences in experience and training.

You may want to consider asking the physician you have chosen how many times he or she has performed this type of operation and whether or not they have had any specialized training in this field. Just because it is elective surgery does not mean that it is any less serious than any other type of invasive surgery.

Many times after a large weight loss you are left with excess skin. This stretched skin may also be a result of pregnancy. One popular procedure to correct this is the liposuction tummy tuck (also known as abdominoplasty).

Once childbearing is over you may opt to have this done. However, if there is a chance you may want to become pregnant again, then you will need to wait, as liposuction that has already been done may separate again, as well as the possibility of restricting fetal growth.

As with many other procedures, liposuction is not completely pain or discomfort free. Experiencing pain after surgery is common. There is also a possibility of drainage from the incisions after liposuction, but these are normal, and if necessary your doctor may insert a drainage tube to avoid the build-up of fluid.

By following your doctor's advice you will have a better chance of getting through it with as little discomfort as possible. Remember to ask your doctor any questions you may have prior to the procedure so that everything is understood. And try not to be too impatient while waiting to see the results, as liposuction recovery means different things to different people.
