Snus is a smokeless tobacco product with several hundreds years of history. Used now and then in different forms, the smokeless tobacco product known as Swedish snuff developed about 300 hundred years ago. Some of the brands like Ettan are being produced since 1822 while other news brands like the Skruf snus are produced only since 2003. Ettan products became a symbol of Sweden and the Swedish people. If in the beginning this product was intended mostly for the working class, it later developed into being a product used by the upper class, and then became unfashionable for again for a while.

In the beginning of the 1800s when a lot of farmers in Sweden had tobacco plantations, snuff and snus became popular again. The plantation owners were making their own snuff by grinding the tobacco in coffee grinders or other types of grinders. In time they developed their own recipes by adding water and salt in different percentages and sometimes herbal or fruity flavors and different kind of oils. This kind of product reached America between the 1850s and the 1930s when more than a million Swedish went to the United States. Apart from the Swedish snus a similar product named snuff was developed. Though they are similar smokeless tobacco products, they are different from the point of producing as well as the way of being consumed. If the Swedish snuff, like for example the Skruf snus products, is placed under the upper lip, the American and European Snuff products are meant for sniffing or chewing.

The popularity of the smokeless tobacco products decreased with the increasing popularity of the cigarettes that were being advertised all over the world by famous cigarettes brands. However when researchers proved that the cigarettes are a very unhealthy source of nicotine, the snuff’s regained the attention of the nicotine users. Today Sweden is one of the most successful producers of smokeless tobacco products offering a great variety of brands like General, Ettan or Skruf snus products. Offered in loose type or portion type, this product reaches more and more people because several researchers showed that this kind of products are less harmful and they are an affordable choice for people who want or have to quit cigarettes smoking.

This smokeless tobacco product is more and more popular among women. The advantages are that while your body still gets the nicotine in the blood, the pouches are almost invisible to other people and there is no reason to upset the other people around the users, like for example smoke and ash. The market for this smokeless tobacco product is different from region to region. The biggest market for these kinds of products is the North American market. In Europe the market is more developed in the manufacturing countries Sweden, Norway and Denmark, but getting more and more popular in the Non European Union countries. In some of the European Union countries the use of the Swedish snuff is banned until more research can prove their effects on one’s health.
Author Resource:- Like any other tobacco product snus is considered a recreational drug, but one that is less harmless for the user. Brands like General, Ettan or Skruf snus are available in several countries. However because this type of moist snuff is illegal in several countries, one should be careful when traveling from one country to another and should declare they have the product with them. Remember that declaring the product is better than getting caught using it where it is banned.
